Penelope found a portrait of Gothel and an unknown man (later to be revealed as Rapunzel's biological father, King Wilhelm) whose face was torn. Gothel had been invited to may different balls. Rapunzel accidentally discovered many things from Gothel's past in the basement.
She also gets furious about the fact that when she found out that one of the steps on the stairs was squeaking. She categorically dislikes painting, and, when she saw traces of paint on Rapunzel's face, she is furious. Gothel made Princess Rapunzel her own servant, who must keep the manor in perfect order.
When Princess Rapunzel, the protagonist of the movie, was a baby, Gothel kidnaps her and puts her in her manor hidden in the dark woods behind a magic wall.
